Trip back to Vietnam

I had a brief visit back to Vietnam over winter break and had an amazing experience back home with family and friends. One of the most interesting things I want to share is the payment system. Other than instant account-to-account transfers, QR payments have become part of daily life. After lunch, some of my friends and I had iced tea (“tra da”) on the street pavement. We forgot to bring cash, but the store owner kindly showed us not one but two QR codes so that we could pay via either. And believe me, the price was less than a quarter of a dollar but still with no payment fee. This is not just the case for this iced tea store but for almost all other stores I came across last month. Two years ago, my team had a great consulting project on digitalization strategy for the Vietnamese banking system, and the initiatives we created on paper now have real and widespread impact. This makes me really excited to witness the rest of these initiatives come true to make the payment system fast but also secure, and reliable.
